By the time a company announces a restructure of its most valuable division, the restructure is usually a managed response to losses that have already happened. Alphabet's Tuesday announcement — Demis Hassabis moving off day-to-day DeepMind operations, four of Google's most historically significant engineers leaving to build a spinout, and roughly four to five percent coming off the share price on the news — is being reported as a reshuffle. It reads better as a receipt.
The sequence matters more than any single event. According to Fortune's reporting on the August 5 announcement, Hassabis is stepping back from the DeepMind CEO role to become chairman of Google DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet, retaining a brief over AGI (artificial general intelligence — systems that match or exceed human capability across most cognitive work) strategy and Isomorphic Labs, Alphabet's drug-discovery unit.1 Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously DeepMind's chief technology officer, becomes senior vice president reporting directly to Sundar Pichai, with responsibility for Gemini model development, frontier research, the Gemini app, and the developer teams, per Search Engine Watch's account of the same announcement.2
Simultaneously, four engineers left. Fortune reports Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le are departing to co-found a company called Discovery Loop, with Dean as CEO.1 Search Engine Watch, citing Discovery Loop's own website, notes the four founders' combined record includes work on multiple generations of Google Search, Google Ads, Google Translate, TensorFlow, TPUs, Gemini and several foundational machine-learning techniques.2 That is not a normal departure; it is roughly the technical spine of the last fifteen years of Google infrastructure walking out together.
Then read the announcement against what had already happened. AI Model Report, in a June 25 write-up of Google's Gemini 3.5 Pro schedule slip, notes that Google had already lost Noam Shazeer, a Gemini co-lead and co-author of the transformer paper, to OpenAI, and Nobel laureate John Jumper to Anthropic, in a pair of departures earlier that summer.3 The same outlet reports the Gemini 3.5 Pro flagship, announced at Google I/O for a June launch, had slipped and remained undelivered.3 Mashable, running the story again in an undated 2026 piece, notes the model was still missing.4 So: Shazeer gone, Jumper gone, the flagship overdue, and now four architects out in a single announcement. Each event has a clean, individual explanation. The sequence does not.
The PBC as recruiting instrument
Discovery Loop's incorporation as a Delaware public benefit corporation is being reported by Relve and by Wilson Sonsini's launch note (via search snippet, as the primary page returned a 403 on fetch).5 I flag it as reported rather than institutionally confirmed. If it is right, it puts Discovery Loop in familiar company. Anthropic is a PBC. OpenAI began life inside a non-profit governance wrapper.
The PBC designation is not, in itself, a constraint on anything a normal C-corp cannot also do. Functionally, it is a recruiting signal: it tells research scientists that financial optimisation is not the primary objective of the entity they are joining. This matters when the people you are trying to recruit have spent years inside a public company and, in Dean's case as characterised by Fortune's read of his New York Times interview, want room to make calls that are not necessarily in the company's purest financial interests.1
I would not overstate the substance here. Alphabet is a founding investor in Discovery Loop and is supplying Google Cloud compute for at least the first year, per Search Engine Watch and Relve, with a stated intent to collaborate on ML systems and infrastructure research.25 Alphabet also funded Anthropic. The pattern is consistent: the mothership takes a stake in the vehicle that exists partly to give its former staff a governance story about not being the mothership. Proximity beats purity. The PBC does the recruiting; the equity does the hedging.
The friendly spinout as a call option
Read the Alphabet-Discovery Loop relationship as a call option and the structure snaps into focus. If Discovery Loop builds something useful on automated experiment loops, Alphabet gets access to it through the investment and the compute relationship. If Discovery Loop fails, Alphabet loses a small equity position and some cycles it was going to spend anyway, and retains the narrative of having supported the founders on their way out. It is not philanthropy. It is a paid position in a bet the mothership can no longer credibly place internally, because the people who believed in the bet have left.
Relve, citing Wired, reports that the idea for Discovery Loop came together among the four co-founders only a few weeks before the announcement.5 Relve also reports that Pichai tried across multiple meetings to retain the team before giving the departure his blessing.5 Both details point in the same direction: this was not a long-planned exit that Google structured over months. It was a fast decision by four senior people, followed by Alphabet doing the only economically rational thing available to it, which was to buy in.
The genuinely unresolved thread here is the IP boundary. What can Discovery Loop actually take with it? The company's stated ambition, per Relve, is to automate the scientific method across machine learning, chip design, biology, drug discovery and materials design, and to be its own first customer by applying those loops to its own ML algorithms before generalising.5 Some of that ambition sits uncomfortably close to work each founder led inside Google. None of the reporting I have seen addresses which techniques, tools, or systems can travel and which cannot. It is the question a careful reader should hold open.
The "AI as researcher" bet, tested
Discovery Loop's premise is that automated experiment loops will out-invent human research teams. Vinod Khosla, whose Khosla Ventures is co-leading the seed round with Radical Ventures per the Wilson Sonsini snippet, told Relve that humans have been using AI to do research rather than using AI to be a researcher.5 It is a real distinction. It is also a distinction every frontier lab already claims to be pursuing.
The counter-case, which Relve makes cleanly, is that the mission is not novel: nearly every major AI figure has claimed AI will become an engine of scientific discovery.5 Discovery Loop has no product, no team beyond the four founders, and no disclosed timeline. The investment case rests on founder reputation. Reputation and results are different things, and the history of research organisations built around superstar teams is not uniformly kind.
The thesis is nonetheless worth taking seriously on its own terms. If small automated-experiment teams start producing real ML advances faster than frontier labs staffed by thousands of humans, the competitive arithmetic of the industry changes sharply — not next year, but within the window in which the current capex commitments have to earn their return. That is the live test, and it is why an Alphabet stake is defensible even to a shareholder who thinks the departures are a disaster: if the thesis works anywhere, you would rather be paid on it than not.
The Kavukcuoglu appointment is the operational story
Most coverage frames Dean's departure as the story. The more consequential appointment may be Kavukcuoglu's. Search Engine Watch reports his responsibilities include Gemini model development, frontier research, the Gemini app and the developer teams, reporting directly to Pichai.2 The prior structure put Hassabis between Gemini execution and the CEO. The new structure removes that layer.
If Gemini 3.5 Pro ships and is competitive, the promotion looks prescient. If it does not, Pichai owns the delivery failure directly, without a layer of insulation between him and the model. Search Engine Watch also notes that no changes were announced to Search's management, AI Overviews or AI Mode, which Kavukcuoglu has been running technically for years.2 The Search franchise is not the exposed surface here. The model release cadence is.
Where this leaves things
The restructure is being reported as a reshuffle. It reads better as a receipt.
Gemini 3.5 Pro remains unshipped. Per AI Model Report's June 25 write-up, Pichai promised it at Google I/O on May 19 for a June launch, then it slipped.3 Mashable reports it was still missing when the outlet went back to the story.4 Neither piece establishes a causal link between the departures and the delay; the correlation is what it is.

What to hold open, then, in the specific rather than the general: whether the Wilson Sonsini investor list survives contact with a proper filing; what exactly the IP boundary is between Discovery Loop and its founding investor; and, most concretely, whether Gemini 3.5 Pro ships this quarter and how it benchmarks against Claude and GPT when it does. Those are the moving numbers. The rest is commentary on a sequence that is not finished.
